Pastoral Staff

S. James Bachmann, Jr.
Senior Pastor

Jim grew up in Nashville and graduated from Overton High School, and then from Belhaven College in Jackson, Miss. After Belhaven, Jim went to Reformed Theological Seminary, and after his first year, he and Kristen were married. After graduation they moved to Lookout Mountain, Ga., where they served the Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church from 1980 to 1991. In the spring of 1991, they accepted the call to Covenant, and have been here since. They have five children.

Jack Foster
Associate Pastor

Jack grew up in Dickson, Tenn., graduated from the University of Tennessee, and moved to Atlanta, Ga., to teach and coach in its public school system. He came to know the Lord in the mid-1980s. He attended Columbia Seminary in South Carolina and graduated from Luther Rice Seminary. The Lord called him to Nashville in 1991 to care for his ailing parents, and here he met and married Jenny, who was home on furlough from her missionary calling in South Africa. Jack served as the senior pastor of Westside Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Bellevue for seven years before transferring into the PCA. He has been on our staff since May 2005, serving primarily in the areas of visitation, counseling and pastoral care. He also assists with teaching and preaching.

 

Matthew Bradley
Associate Pastor

Matt was born in Bryan, Texas, and was raised in the US Air Force living all over the United States and the world. He is a graduate of East Tennessee State University (BA ’96) and Dallas Theological Seminary (ThM ’06). Before entering the ministry, Matt served as an artillery officer in the US Army and a pharmaceutical sales representative with Eli Lilly and Company. He has served as an associate pastor at Covenant since the Summer of 2008. He and his wife, Leslie, have two sons.

 

 

Wayne Herring
Assistant Pastor

Wayne is a part-time pastor at Covenant and leads a class for College and Young Career individuals. Wayne was born in Brandon, Miss., and graduated from Mississippi State University and Reformed Theological Seminary. He has served numerous churches throughout the southeast, and brings vast teaching experience, having served on the faculties of both RTS and Covenant Theological Seminary. Wayne and his wife, Joyce, have five grown daughters and 12 grandchildren.

 

 

 

Phil Roach
Youth Pastor

Phil grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville on a football scholarship, where he became an academic All-American. Phil grew as a Christian under the influence of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and decided to enter youth ministry after school. He earned his M.A. degree from Covenant Seminary and has more than 20 years of youth ministry experience. Phil oversees the youth ministry for grades 6-12, but works most closely with grades 6-8. Phil and his wife, Julia, have three children.

 

 

J Hager
Youth Pastor

J was born and raised in Lexington, Ky., and attended Belmont University in Nashville. He graduated with a degree in design communication, and then went on to earn a Masters in Divinity from Covenant Theological Seminary in May 2008. J’s ministry to youth has included serving as a leader and staff member for Young Life in Nashville, youth director for West End Community Church in Nashville, and youth intern for Central Presbyterian in St. Louis, Mo. J and his wife, Natalie, were married in August 2006.

 

 

Nathan McCall
Children’s Pastor

Nathan comes to Covenant from New Perth Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Troutman, NC. The son of a PCA minister, he grew up in the PCA and is excited to be returning. Though born in Pennsylvania, Nathan has spent most of his life in the South. He graduated from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, where he ran cross country as well as indoor and outdoor track for the Mountaineers. After graduation Nathan married Ruth and they moved to Jefferson City, TN, where she was pursuing a graduate degree in Teaching English as a Second Language. Her formal studies completed, they moved to the Charlotte area so that he could begin course work at Reformed Theological Seminary. During that time he served as a Children’s Pastor and Director of Sports Ministry at Lakeshore PCA. Nathan finds deep joy in teaching and ministering to children and their families. He and Ruth have two children, Adah and Jonah. He enjoys camping, hiking, running, cycling, family time, reading, hammocks, and hunting.
